CN Tower, City Hall and the Distillery District: A Toronto Photo Walk

Toronto's most photographed landmarks are within two kilometres of each other, which makes a half-day photo walk easy to plan around the light. We started at City Hall at sunrise and finished in the Distillery District after dark.

Nathan Phillips Square at first light

The reflecting pool in front of City Hall gives you the curved towers and, in winter, an outdoor ice rink with skaters as foreground. Go before 8:00 for empty pavement. From there, walk south on University Avenue: the CN Tower lines up behind the office towers and appears and disappears as you cross each intersection.

The tower and the harbour

Book the CN Tower for late afternoon so you get daylight, sunset and the lit skyline in one ticket. The main observation level is at 346 metres, with a glass floor section; EdgeWalk runs in the warmer months and needs a separate booking. If the queue is long, the harbourfront and the ferry to the islands give you the tower from a distance without waiting.

Distillery District after dark

The 19th-century Gooderham and Worts warehouses are pedestrian-only, with brick lanes, galleries and the Christmas Market from mid-November. Tripods are common but watch for other visitors; the lit signage near the main entrance is the classic frame.

Practical notes

  • Toronto weather changes fast; keep one indoor alternative per half-day.
  • The tower is clearest in the morning after a cold front, but sunset is better for colour.
  • Wear shoes you can walk in for four hours: the route is about 6 km.
